What is AUB?

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding or AUB is also known as Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding. Generally, menstruation occurs between a cycle of 21-35 days.

The menstruation days can last from around two to seven days depending upon the woman’s body. Abnormal uterine bleeding occurs abnormally between your normal period cycles. it can be caused due to uterus cancer, thyroid, or hormonal imbalance.

Symptoms of AUB

Abnormal bleeding among women can occur due to many reasons. It can also happen due to some side effects of birth control pills, or IUD (Intrauterine Device). Let’s know about the crucial symptoms of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding –

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles

A normal menstrual cycle occurs every 21 days to a maximum of 25 days. But, if you find that your periods are occurring more frequently, then it can be a sign of AUB.

  • Unusual Bleeding

You may spot bleeding at unusual times such as after sex, or between periods. Women can also experience unusual bleeding after menopause.

  • Longer Menstrual Days

A normal period cycle lasts up to 7 days. But if you find that your periods are lasting for more than that, then you need to consult a doctor.

  • Heavy Bleeding

Heavy bleeding during periods is also known as Menorrhagia which can be a symptom of AUB. Excessive bleeding can also lead to loss of blood which can cause Anaemia and other diseases as well.

Irregular bleeding is normal among teenagers, and women experiencing menopause. But, you also need to know about the reason that causes AUB-

  • Platelet Dysfunction 

AUB can also be caused due to low or high platelet counts. If you face any platelet dysfunction, then it can cause excessive blood loss. 

  • Hormonal Changes

From menstruation to pregnancy and menopause several hormonal changes occur. These changes can cause AUB.

  • Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix which is located below the uterus. The common symptom of cervical cancer is vaginal discharge with a foul smell. Also, it causes your periods to extend than your regular days. 

  • Polyps

Polyps are also non-cancerous tumors, however, they can be a major problem for fertility. Women suffering from polyps can suffer from adverse menstrual problems. 

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome 

PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a medical condition where cysts develop in ovaries.  As a result, the endometrium of the uterus lining gets thick which causes heavy bleeding for longer days. 

  • Fibroids

There are two types of fibroids- large and small. It is a non-cancerous tumor that develops in the uterus. It can cause heavy bleeding during menstruation.

How AUB is diagnosed?

You should immediately consult a doctor if you have any of these symptoms. The doctor may ask your important questions and tests for further diagnosis-

  • For how long you have been experiencing these symptoms?
  • You have to go through a pregnancy test and a pelvic ultrasound
  • Blood tests
  • Sample of Uterus Tissue
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Hormone Tests

Treatments of AUB

After the doctor conducts the important tests, then they will begin your treatment. But, if your conditions don’t get better, and then only they proceed to surgery. These are some medications the doctors will prescribe-

  • Tranexamic Acid
  • Intrauterine Device
  • Pills for Birth Control
  • Progesterone
  • NSAIDS
  • GnRH Agonists

These are the few steps to prevent AUB so that you can prevent the adverse effects of the disease-

  • Notice any irregular changes in your blood flow
  • Avoid taking estrogen
  • If you are going through post-menopause, then you should avoid oral contraceptives
  • Consult a gynecologist
